A Panel Discussion on Fisher v. University of Texas: The Impact of Race-Conscious Admissions on the Asian-American Community
Thursday, May 23, 2013, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Asian Pacific American Legal Center, 1145 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles
$6 Parking at Structure next to APALC on S. Lucas Ave with Signage “Parking for Good Samaritan Hospital & 1127 Wilshire Blvd”
Though Fisher did not directly deal with Asian-Americans, the issue of race-conscious admissions (also known as “affirmative action”) and the experience of the Asian-American community has come to the fore in this case. Both proponents and antagonists of race-conscious admissions programs have referred to the Asian-American experience in support of their arguments, and indeed, Asian-American groups have submitted positions on both sides of the issue.
This panel discussion will explore the impact of race-conscious admissions to the Asian-American community and to diversity, generally. The Supreme Court will soon opine on this issue, and the panel will examine the nuances of how Fisher may impact our communities.
Panelists:
Susan Wilbur, Ph.D., Director of Undergraduate Admissions, UCLA
Laboni Hoq, Esq., Asian Pacific American Legal Center
Albert Giang, Esq., Caldwell Leslie & Proctor, PC
Moderated by Mike Eng, former California Assemblymember and Los Angeles County Community College Trustee-elect
