November TABA Updates

Here are TABA’s November Updates:

1. “Substance Abuse in the Legal Profession MCLE” (11.19.13, Advancing Justice – LA, 6:30-7:30pm)

TABA is joining with the Japanese American Bar Association and Asian Americans Advancing Justice | LA to sponsor a live MCLE presentation on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm at Advancing Justice – LA, 1145 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. $25 for TABA members, $40 for non-members — dinner included, starting at 5:45pm. The presenter is C. Edward Dilkes, attorney and past president of The Other Bar, a 12-step sobriety program for lawyers, judges, and law students. Having trudged his own way back to sobriety, he spends much of his spare time working with others to help them become and stay sober. The program provides the ever elusive one MCLE credit in substance abuse, which is all you need for your 3-year reporting period. As a reminder, attorneys with last names beginning N through Z need to complete their MCLE requirements by 1/31/2014. RSVP by Monday, November 18, 2013 to Mark Yoshida at myoshida@advancingjustice-la.org, (213)977-7500 ext. 247. Payment may be made at the door; check (payable to “JABA”) or cash is fine. See attached flyer for more details.

2. Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fundraiser (11.19.13, Smith House, 6:30-8:30pm):

Please join UNICEF, the PABA, TABA, and many other APA associations to help raise money for Typhoon Haiyan Relief. An estimated 2.8 million preschool and school aged children may have been displaced by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. This fundraiser will raise money to go towards disaster relief in the Philippines. The event is November 19, 2013 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Smith House located at 10351 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90025. Attendees will have the opportunity to make direct donations to UNICEF (whose offices are directly above Smith House) and a portion of the proceeds raised at the bar will be donated as well. You can also donate at www.unicefusa.org/haiyanfundraiser.

3. Volunteers Needed for 14th Annual APA Holiday Toy Drive and Reception on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 6:00pm at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles:

TABA is co-sponsoring the APA Toy Drive, which is held by several Asian and Pacific Islander professional organizations. The purpose is to gather toys and donate them to various non-profit organizations who serve low-income families in need of toys and gifts for the holidays. Each co-sponsoring organization is responsible for recruiting volunteers from their respective organizations, and TABA would like to invite you to become a volunteer. This event would not be possible without the contributions of volunteers, so please join us! Email khommarath.kathy@gmail.com to sign up or for questions/comments.

4. TABA on Thai TV:

NAT TV’s Lawyer Talk program is looking for attorneys to appear to talk about discrete areas of law. The television appearance basically consists of one and a half hour live one-on-one interviews in which attorneys talk about themselves, how they got to to where they are, and discuss the area of law in which they practice. NAT TV is aired nationally and in Canada. This is great way for you (and TABA!) to gain exposure and publicize your services. It is not necessary to speak Thai because the show host will assist with interpretation for the audience. For more information, please email president@tabalawyers.org.
