Welcome to the TABA End of August 2015 Announcements!

1. 2nd Generation Thai American Professionals Networking Event / 630pm Thu Sep 3, Larchmont Village area

The Thai Consul General, Mr. Jesda Katavetin, has extended an invitation to TABA members and friends of TABA for a reception at the Consul General’s residence on Thursday, September 3, 2015, for 2nd generation Thai American professionals.

The purpose of the event is for networking and socializing among 2nd generation Thai American professionals across various industries. The Consulate has been organizing similar events for the past three years and has been successful in connecting 2nd generation Thai American professionals and strengthening the Thai community in Southern California as a whole. They are expecting around 100 young Thai American professionals to attend this year.

2. IILP Symposium: The State of Diversity and Inclusion in the Legal Profession / 1pm Thu Sep 24, Sidley Austin DTLA

Please join TABA at the Institute for Inclusion in the Legal Profession’s Los Angeles Symposium on the State of Diversity and Inclusion in the Legal Profession.

With the American legal profession continuously struggling with creating a more diverse and inclusive profession, efforts to improve on this front become complex, given a variety of definitions of “diversity,” and varying experiences of exclusion. This Symposium, along with the IILP 2014 Review, aggregates the latest data, statistics and perspectives to make it easier for practicing lawyers, judges, and others to understand vast issues of diversity and inclusion and hear the ways in which these issues are being tackled across the profession.

1. NAPABA Convention / Fri Aug 28 Early Registration Deadline

As a friendly reminder, the NAPABA Convention early-bird rate expires this Friday, Aug. 28 at 11:59 p.m. EDT. In order to take advantage of the member discount ($100 savings), individuals must be a direct member of NAPABA or they must have activated their NAPABA affiliate/national associate membership directly on NAPABA’s website before registering. 2. Public Interest Scholarship for 2015 NAPABA Convention / Fri Oct 9 deadline

The Jung Foundation is generously providing two (2) scholarships to allow public interest attorneys in California to attend the 2015 NAPABA convention Nov 5-8 in New Orleans. The application deadline is Fri Oct 9, 2015.

2015 NAPABA Convention in New Orleans: 2 Public Interest Scholarships Offered by the Jung Foundation (apply by 10/9)

The Charles & Melita Jung Foundation (Jung Foundation) is sponsoring two public interest attorney scholarships to the 2015 NAPABA Convention. The scholarships are intended to encourage and make it easier for public interest attorneys to participate in NAPABA.

The award consists of the following: (1) Flight: the Jung Foundation will purchase for each recipients a round trip ticket from California to New Orleans on Southwest Airlines; (2) ConferenceRegistration: conference registration fee reimbursement at the NAPABA member public interest member rate (register by October 26, 2015); and for one of the two recipients (3) Hotel Stay: reimbursement for a 3-night stay at the Loews New Orleans Hotel.

The application deadline is October 9, 2015 (the scholarships will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning 8/21/15, so the earlier the better). 3. NAPABA Young Lawyers Network Leadership Opportunities / Mon Sep 14 deadline

The NAPABA Young Lawyers Network (YLN) is looking to grow its subcommittees and leadership team. If you are interested in joining a YLN subcommittee, please contact co-chair Barbara Lum (barbara.lum@thompsonhine.com) and indicate the subcommittee in which you would be interested in participating (see the list below). If you are interested in leading a subcommittee, please send Barbara a brief statement about your interest in the position, and what goals/ideas you would bring to the subcommittee leadership position. Statements of interest are due Sept. 14, 2015.

1. Community Service Subcommittee (plan YLN community service events)
2. CLE and Professional Program Subcommittee (plan one to two YLN CLE programs for annual and regional conventions, and plan professional development programs such as branding, marketing type programs)
3. Social and Networking Subcommittee (plan social and networking events for YLN members, including, most importantly, the new attendee/YLN dinner for this year’s annual convention, as well as joint events with other bar associations or other NAPABA committees, may be regional or national)
4. Recruiting and Marketing Subcommittee (find and bring in new members; perform marketing for YLN)
