Please join TABA at the Institute for Inclusion in the Legal Profession’s Los Angeles Symposium on the State of Diversity and Inclusion in the Legal Profession.
With the American legal profession continuously struggling with creating a more diverse and inclusive profession, efforts to improve on this front become complex, given a variety of definitions of “diversity,” and varying experiences of exclusion. This Symposium, along with the IILP 2014 Review, aggregates the latest data, statistics and perspectives to make it easier for practicing lawyers, judges, and others to understand vast issues of diversity and inclusion and hear the ways in which these issues are being tackled across the profession.

4. Nominations for TABA Elections / Deadline: 5pm Fri Oct 9
We are looking for candidates for next year’s TABA Board of Governors and officers (President-Elect, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary) for TABA’s Executive Board. If you are interested in running for a board or officer position, please email to president@tabalawyers.org (1) a Statement of Interest and (2) your Bio (one paragraph or so) by 5:00 p.m. Pacific on Friday, October 9, 2015.
The TABA Board meets on the first Wednesday of every month. A conference call option is available for those who are not able to attend in person. Board members are expected to attend board meetings and TABA events. Officers have additional duties commensurate with their title.
TABA is involved in hosting and co-sponsoring many events and services, however, these do not happen by themselves. We need you to help us continue to provide these events and services or come up with one of your own.
We look forward to hearing about your candidacy for board member or officer.

1. Volunteer Thai/English Speakers Needed / 4-8pm Thu Sep 24, Royal Thai Consulate General, Los Angeles
Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Los Angeles is looking for volunteers with Thai-English language skills to help with completing applications, check-in, and check-out at a citizenship workshop at the Royal Thai Consulate General Los Angeles. This workshop will be targeting the Thai speaking community in Los Angeles area and we are lacking of Thai-English speaking volunteers.

Volunteer Sign-Up Procedures: Because client needs are not apparent until 2-3 days before each clinic, interested volunteers will be asked to indicate their anticipated availability for the summer, and volunteers will be contacted approximately 2-3 days in advance if they are needed. In other words, if you are NOT contacted a few days before a workshop by our staff, please assume you do NOT need to volunteer for that workshop. Thank you!

2. APABA’s State Bar Review Course Scholarship / 5pm Thu Oct 1 deadline
APABA is sponsoring its third annual Bar Review Course Scholarship, generously sponsored by Kaplan Bar Review. The scholarship recipients will receive a Complete Bar Review course, which is redeemable for any state, in any modality that Kaplan offers Bar Review courses. The value of the 2015 California Live Course is $3,995.00.
The Bar Review Course Scholarship will be awarded to two graduating 3L law students based on need, academic accomplishments, leadership potential, and commitment to making a contribution to the APIA community of Los Angeles County. Please see the attached application for directions on how to apply.
3. NAPABA At-Large Board Member Nominations / Fri Oct 2 deadline
The NAPABA Board of Governors will appoint two At-Large Board Members to each serve a two-year term beginning with the 2015-2016 bar year. The NAPABA Nominating and Elections Committee invites all members in good standing to apply to be At-Large Board Members by submitting a statement of interest and completing a short demographic survey before 6 p.m. EDT on Friday, Oct. 2, 2015.

4. Public Interest Scholarship for 2015 NAPABA Convention / Fri Oct 9 deadline
The Jung Foundation is generously providing two (2) scholarships to allow public interest attorneys in California to attend the 2015 NAPABA convention Nov 5-8 in New Orleans. The application deadline is Fri Oct 9, 2015.
2015 NAPABA Convention in New Orleans: 2 Public Interest Scholarships Offered by the Jung Foundation (apply by 10/9)
The Charles & Melita Jung Foundation (Jung Foundation) is sponsoring two public interest attorney scholarships to the 2015 NAPABA Convention. The scholarships are intended to encourage and make it easier for public interest attorneys to participate in NAPABA.
The award consists of the following: (1) Flight: the Jung Foundation will purchase for each recipients a round trip ticket from California to New Orleans on Southwest Airlines; (2) ConferenceRegistration: conference registration fee reimbursement at the NAPABA member public interest member rate (register by October 26, 2015); and for one of the two recipients (3) Hotel Stay: reimbursement for a 3-night stay at the Loews New Orleans Hotel.

5. Request for Funding to Restore Thai Classical Instruments / UCLA
UCLA Revives Thai Classical Music Ensemble; Funding Required for Additional Restoration and Ongoing Instruction and Performance
On May 23, 2015, the UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies sponsored a performance on the “Music of Thailand at UCLA” in the Schoenberg Music Building. This program featured a number of Thai classical musical instruments that UCLA has owned for fifty years, but which have been sitting unused for the past thirty years following the retirement of Prof. David Morton, who collected them in Thailand.
About six months ago, the UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology commissioned ethnomusicologist Supeena Insee Adler (Ph.D., UC Riverside) to refurbish many, although not all of, the instruments. Dr. Adler also organized the May 23 concert, which featured mostly Thai American musicians from California, and included UCLA’s Thai language instructor Dr. Jenjit Gasigitamrong and three of her students from the UCLA Thai language class. The program also featured historical information about David Morton and the original collection of the instruments, a report on the restoration project by Supeena Adler, and a testament to the value of Thai classical music for inspiring modern composition.
The concert included:
1. Jomsuraang Overture (hard mallet piiphaat ensemble)
2. Khaek Boratheat with solos for each instrument (piiphaat with strings)
3. Kheak Taui Mau (soft mallet piiphaat ensemble)
4. Faum Ngieo and Utayaan Dauk Mai (string ensemble with vocalists)
5. Khamen Sai Yok and Mayuraaphirom (string ensemble with xylophone)
6. Lao Duang Kauk Mai and Lao Phaen (string ensemble with xylophone and khaen)
7. Lao Duang Duean (string ensemble with khaen)
Prof. Helen Rees of the Department of Ethnomusicology thanked the Department and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies for their support of the concert and the restoration project. At the same time, she expressed regret that further funds were not available to complete the restoration of all of the instruments or to sponsor Dr. Adler to teach a Thai classical music ensemble class at UCLA such as is offered for the classical music of India or the Indonesian Balinese gamelan. Now that a good start has been made on restoring the instruments, and since Dr. Adler is able and willing to teach an ensemble class, it would be wonderful if additional funds could be raised to support the project. Dr. Barbara Gaerlan, Assistant Director of the Center, will be working with Prof. Rees on fund-raising. Anyone interested should contact her at cseas@international.ucla.edu.

Contra Costa County Deputy District Attorney / Fri Sep 25 deadline
Contra Costa County has an excellent opportunity for interested individuals to gain up to three (3) years of trial experience as a public prosecutor in the District Attorney’s Office. Those appointed to the class of Deputy District Attorney- Fixed Term are limited to one (1) appointment of up to 36 consecutive months, which begins at the date of hire. Long-term career opportunities with the District Attorney’s Office may be available after the requisite experience as a prosecuting attorney has been attained. The Deputy District Attorney- Fixed Term prepares and prosecutes misdemeanor and less complicated felony cases, and prepares various legal documents in connection with trial and legal proceedings. Incumbents also prosecute contested delinquency hearing in juvenile court and confer with defense staff, probation authorities, and court officials to discuss pleas, modification of charges, and presentation and examination of evidence prior to trial. In addition, the Deputy District Attorney- Fixed Term will perform a wide variety of legal research related to the preparation of cases, opinions, and briefs.
