1. DEADLINE EXTENDED!! Nominations for TABA Elections / Deadline: 5pm Tue Oct 13
We are looking for candidates for next year’s TABA Board of Governors and officers (President-Elect, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary) for TABA’s Executive Board. If you are interested in running for a board or officer position, please email to president@tabalawyers.org (1) a Statement of Interest and (2) your Bio (one paragraph or so) by 5:00 p.m. Pacific on Tuesday, October 13, 2015.
The TABA Board meets on the first Wednesday of every month. A conference call option is available for those who are not able to attend in person. Board members are expected to attend board meetings and TABA events. Officers have additional duties commensurate with their title.
TABA is involved in hosting and co-sponsoring many events and services, however, these do not happen by themselves. We need you to help us continue to provide these events and services or come up with one of your own.
We look forward to hearing about your candidacy for board member or officer.

City Attorney Mike Feuer is partnering with the Thai Community Development Center, Thai Town Rotary Club, Thai Association of Southern California and Thai American Bar Association to host a community forum for the Thai Community. This event will be held on October 26th at 6:00 PM at Hollyview Senior Housing – Community Room (5411 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles).
Meet City Attorney Feuer and members of the City Attorney’s Office. Connect with local staff from LAPD Hollywood Community Station. Learn about how we work together to keep the neighborhood safe and about the many different services we provide. Bring questions, concerns and ideas.

4. API Equality LA 10th Anniversary Celebration / 6pm Sat Oct 24, JANM LA
TABA has two (2) free tickets to the API Equality LA 10th Anniversary Celebration on Sat Oct 24 at the Japanese American National Museum in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. TABA is a community sponsor for the event. Please email president@tabalawyers.org if you are available/interested. It will be a sit-down dinner.
From the organization: “The theme of our Anniversary is “Leading Change” and we will be honoring key individuals and organizations for their contributions to our movement, including a special award for the L.A. LGBT Center. We will be celebrating the Supreme Court’s historic decision on same-sex marriage and other recent victories and making sure to keep our organization sustainable in order to continue fighting for transgender equality, immigration justice and youth empowerment.”

5. SAVE THE DATE! Elder Law Clinic / Sun Nov 1, Wat Pa, La Puente
SAVE THE DATE! Please join TABA for our annual Elder Law Clinic on Sun Nov 1 at Wat Pa in La Puente. Give back to the community by helping elders complete Advanced Healthcare Directive and Durable Powers of Attorney. We seek attorney and law student volunteers to help the elders complete the forms, as well as Thai/English language/culture interpreters to help the attorneys/law students interface with the elders. Training with MCLE credit will be provided for the attorneys/law students. Vocabulary sheets will be provided for the translators.

This CLE program and discussion forum will focus on the Transgender Law and how we can eliminate bias against Transgender attorneys within the legal profession and acceptance of Transgender attorneys. The topics to be discussed include: Importance of Diversity in the Legal profession, Historical & Cultural – Social, Legal and Religious Prohibitions, Transgender Discrimination and Legal Development, Transgender Youth in Schools, Transgender individuals in the Military, Marriage Equality (Divorce and Child Custody) and Transgender Individuals in Jails and Prisons.

The Vietnamese American Bar Association of Southern California (VABASC) will be holding its installation dinner on Fri Oct 23 at the Avenue of the Arts Wyndham Hotel in Costa Mesa, California. Andrew Do, Orange County Supervisor, will provide welcoming remarks. The Hon. Bao Nguyen, Mayor of Garden Grove, will provide the keynote speech. The Hon. Cheri Pham from the Orange County Superior Court will provide the administration of oath.

The Orange County Korean American Bar Association (OCKABA) is holding its 10th Anniversary Installation Dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 18th at the Turnip Rose Promenade and Gardens. Ms. Carol Lam, Sr. Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of Qualcomm Inc, former U.S. Attorney, and former San Diego County Superior Court judge will be the keynote speaker and Community Service Award recipient. Mr. Seung Bak, Co-Founder and CEO of DramaFever.com, will receive the Corporate Trailblazer award.
